Know Your Class

The most important thing in WoW has always been the knowledge of your particular class and spec. Deciding to pick a certain class like a Mage or a Paladin is the most important choice there is because the whole gameplay and approach changes. You never do the same thing the other classes do. Even if you do, they are quite different. Learning the spell rotations and how to maximize your performance is how you practice getting better.

There are 12 classes in WoW and every single one has different spells, moves, and ways they work. You can only get better once you understand the class, the story behind them, and how they actually work in the game. There are plenty of ways you can practice and get the right combination of spells into your fingers. From training dummies and duels to older and easier content you can see what works best and how your output is the highest.

Know Your Role

Each class and spec does a certain thing and each of them fulfils a special role. Mages are ranged damage dealers and they can be Fire, Frost, or Arcane spec. Paladins can either be healers with the Holy spec, melee damage dealers with Retribution, or tanks with Protection. This means that Mages are always DPS while Paladins can have three roles in a group. Trying to step out of your role and do something else never results in anything productive. Do not try to contribute to damage if you are a healer. You can cast an occasional damage spell here and there but focus on healing your comrades 99% of the time. If the damage is not enough to down the boss in time, it is not your fault.

The same goes if you are a tank. Protect others and mind your agro. Damage dealers, apart from doing the heavy lifting and killing the bosses, must also be wary of their movement. Minimize the damage you take from the boss by zoning well and evading the boss’s attacks. This makes the job easier both for the tanks and the healers. Only if everyone does their part can you do the job, and knowing what you need to do will allow you to improve. Getting better with your role can be done more easily if you have the right help, and there is no better help than boosts. Check the Journal

There is a special piece of UI in WoW called The Dungeon Journal. It is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of information on all the dungeons, raids, and boss mechanics. Knowing what each boss does and when, as well as how each dungeon and raid are different will allow you to be better at raiding and Mythic+.

For every dungeon and raid there is a special section. Each of them tells you all the details about the boss, their abilities and phases, and the loot they drop once you finally kill them. This is the basic knowledge without which you should not even enter a dungeon or a raid. Doing it so will make you clueless and a liability for the rest of the dungeon or raid group.

Get to Know Each One

Shadowlands has 8 dungeons and they differ in complexity, difficulty, and the number of bosses. The Necrotic Wake, Plaguefall, Mists of Tirna Scithe, and Halls of Atonement are the easier four. De Other Side, Sanguine Depths, Spires of Ascension, and Theater of Pain are harder. However, all of them will be hard if you do not know what each boss does, what you should do while fighting it with your spec, and where to stand during which phase. Tazavesh, the Veiled Market is a mega dungeon and it is quite fun to do, but the bosses are even more complex and every single person has to do the mechanics right even at the easiest setting. Here, reading the journal can save time and allow you to know exactly what needs to be done all the time.

The real hard work arrives in raids, Castle Nathria and Sanctum of Domination. Each of them has 10 bosses and there are four difficulties. LFR is the easiest and used for practicing and learning the ropes, so be sure to clear it at least once to know the place. Normal is where you start doing more and preparing for Heroic where things get quite challenging and the stakes rise. Mythic comes with the best rewards but also the hardest challenges to complete. Bosses have more health, there are more frequent mechanics, and the whole thing is meant for the best players who have the best gear.
